Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery

What is laser-assisted cataract surgery?

Laser-assisted cataract surgery is one option you may choose to pursue when treating your cataracts. The doctors here at SAO are trained in the advanced LenSx Laser System to give you the clear vision you deserve.

The biggest advantage to laser-assisted cataract surgery is the precision and consistency it provides. As opposed to traditional cataract surgery, laser-assisted cataract surgery uses a LenSx laser imaging device to trace the surface of the eye. The exact location and size of the incision to be made on the eye is determined. This information is forwarded to the laser, which will make the corneal incision. The laser can also be used to soften the cataract. An ultrasound is then used to break up the cloudy lens and is then suctioned out of the eye. At this point, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted.

Why would this procedure be performed?

Laser-assisted cataract surgery is usually performed when astigmatism correction is also needed. This is because the laser can also provide refractive correction by reshaping the cornea.

The surgery is also offered if the patient wants a premium astigmatism correcting or multifocal lens implanted. Our doctors will discuss with you all of you options when determining how to best treat your cataracts.

What is the recovery process like?

The recovery process is nearly identical to that of traditional cataract surgery. No stitches are typically required and most patients begin seeing clearly almost immediately, or in no more than a few weeks after surgery. Contact us today if you believe you may have cataracts and would like to discuss your treatment options with a doctor in our practice.
